How to Specify Custom Ultra-thin Metal Shims

Specify thin shim thickness, profile, slot geometry, flatness, burr condition and handling for a drawing-based laser cutting review.

What is a custom metal shim?

A shim is a thin component used to adjust a gap, position or spacing in an assembly. Custom profiles may include an open slot, bolt hole or ring shape so the shim fits the mating component. The required thickness and functional contact area should come from the assembly design.

What thickness information should a shim drawing include?

State the nominal thickness, allowed thickness variation and whether one thickness or a set of thicknesses is required. Specify quantity for each thickness. A nominal sheet thickness is different from a guaranteed finished thickness; confirm material condition and acceptance criteria during quotation.

How do slot and hole details affect the specification?

Dimension slot width, length, end shape and the entry opening, and locate holes from a named datum. Explain whether a slot provides adjustment or lets a shim slide around an installed fastener. Specify the minimum contact width around openings and any critical mating clearance.

Which edge and flatness requirements matter for thin shims?

Identify burr direction, permitted edge condition and the surfaces that contact the assembly. Define flatness or deformation limits if they affect function, and state how the part is to be inspected. Ultra-thin material needs review of cutting, separation and handling against the actual grade and profile.

What material and packing information should be included?

Name the alloy or steel grade, product standard, temper or condition and any surface-protection requirement. Request separation and labeling by thickness and revision when mixing would affect assembly. Handling and packing requirements belong in the RFQ because they affect the delivered component.

Is there a published minimum thickness for every shim?

No universal minimum thickness is published for every material and profile. Send the exact thickness, smallest features, quantity and flatness or burr requirements for a feasibility review. The illustrated products explain component types; they are not stock items or blanket process guarantees.
